Such motor memories probably reside in the basal ganglia and cerebellum. A simple example is motor memory, such as the ability to ride a bicycle, which is remarkably resistant to hippocampal damage. Several aspects of memory do not involve the conscious recall involved in the three temporal memory stages. San Diego, CA, US: Elsevier Academic Press, xi, 414 pp.Joseph Jankovic MD, in Bradley and Daroff's Neurology in Clinical Practice, 2022 Other Types of Memory (Nondeclarative or Implicit Memory)Ī confusing array of memory classifications and terminology has arisen, as shown in Table 7.2. Advances in child development and behavior. Advances in child development and behavior (Vol 35). Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning memory and Cognition, 11, 501-518 Implicit and explicit memory for new associations in normal and amnesic subjects. Studies using patients with amnesia or Alzheimer’s have shown that it is possible to have a fully functioning implicit memory system despite having a significantly impaired explicit memory system. ![]() Adults use the explicit memory system to learn the rules and vocabulary of the new language, most often with greater effort.Īs a person ages, explicit memory skills tend to decline yet implicit memory skills often remain intact. Interestingly, explicit and implicit memories are utilized differently at divergent points in a person’s life.įor example, a child under the age of 7 tends to learn a new language easily, without much thought, using the implicit memory system. Implicit memories are encoded and stored by the cerebellum (and putamen, caudate nucleus and motor cortex depending on the type of activity). Explicit memories are considered more complex as they are comprised of a variety of aspects in a given situation.įor example, if you want to recall a meeting from last week, you will recall the event as well as the context around it such as the time of day, place, objects and people that were present.Įxplicit memories appear to be encoded in the medial temporal lobe of the brain (hippocampus, entorhinal cortex and perirhinal cortex) but stored in the temporal cortex. These two types of long term memory are fundamentally different in processing as well as where they are stored in the brain.Įxplicit memories are easily verbalized and require a conscious recollection in order to recall something whereas implicit memories lack conscious awareness. How do Explicit Memory and Implicit Memory Differ? You don’t make conscious decisions to remember everything around you and yet when you need an object, for example, you are often able to visualize and recall where you last saw it. As you go about your day, you absorb information from your environment without thinking about it. Implicit memory occurs at an unconscious level all day long. This helps explain why elderly people are more capable when they stay in a place they are familiar with if you place that same individual in an unfamiliar place they will no longer have the implicit memories, the automatic routines, that they were able to utilize in their familiar environment and may make the elderly person appear significantly more impaired. These forms of memory are still usable even after organic brain damage such as Alzheimer’s because they do not require conscious executive functioning in other words, you don’t have to think about it. The literature indicates that implicit memory is present at birth and it is less pervious to age-related changes or damage from diseases like Alzheimer’s. It consists of automatic sensorimotor procedures that are so deeply embedded that we are no longer conscious (we have no explicit awareness) of the individual actions required to carry out that process. It is sometimes called “procedural memory” as these motor memories allow us to carry out motor actions automatically.

The harmful experiences in location-based entertainment of the past 20-30 years that we cannot unsee weren’t done out of a ‘let’s be racist, it’ll be great!’ mentality. At Thinkwell, we’re keenly aware that no matter how good our intentions in the past, we have fallen short at times, and it’s on us to examine what we do and how we do it to ensure we don’t perpetuate racism in our work. It’s affected by processes and policies, too. When it comes to what stories are told in our parks and our museums, a large part of that is who’s had a place at the table, for the majority of our industry’s history, to make creative decisions, to greenlight and fund projects, to decide what has value or make a team pause and take stock of what they’re really saying with the stories they’re telling and how they’re telling them. We are guilty of it in our body of work, too – there are projects we’ve worked on that, in hindsight, we should have done a little differently. The normalization of racist tropes is everywhere, from what we collect and how we display it in museums to countless “Wild West” zones in amusement parks to big iconic experiences like Splash Mountain, and thousands of moments in between. These experiences have always been harmful, and it’s an insidious outcome of white privilege to be blind to it. It goes on and on: Peter Pan’s original source material was dizzyingly racist about Indigenous people and the ride does not shy away from it the Enchanted Tiki Room falls into the trap of so much white-washed, culturally-appropriative Polynesia theming the European children on It’s a Small World are white as can be (and there are Middle Eastern kids on flying carpets) the Africa outpost in Epcot reduces a vibrant swath of an entire continent to a beverage stop, trinket market, and a few drums. As you eyeroll at the corny humor of your Jungle Cruise skipper, your boat bobs around a corner and to a horrifyingly racist vignette. The soft-focus memories of Dumbo crash up against the knowledge that the lead crow is quite literally named Jim Crow. ![]() ![]() Reworking Splash Mountain is also an absolute rabbit hole (pun not really intended) because once your eyes are opened to the ways – both subtle and categorically unsubtle – that racism pervades narrative tropes and beloved experiences, it’s overwhelming. Joe Rohde, in his talk at the 2012 THEA awards by the Themed Entertainment Association spoke at length about the Aulani design process, how authenticity and respect were placed ahead of ease and preconceived notions, and actually how easy design decisions can be when they are strongly rooted in authentic, clear direction informed by the actual people and place and not one’s own hot take on the source material.ĭon’t get us wrong: we are, no matter how fond our memories are of Splash Mountain, heartened to see Disney take this step. Their intentionality around Expedition Everest as well as core elements of the original Animal Kingdom demonstrates it can be done. To give them their due, Disney also has amply demonstrated they know how to concede curatorial authority, as it were. Just like any of a number of other resorts, rides, shows, and exhibitions around the U.S., not to mention the world. One of the chief problems we encounter as creatives in location-based entertainment is this clash of memory, “that’s just how it was back then,” “it will cost so much/upset the fans to change it” versus the knowledge that it’s harmful and needs to change. Obviously, no matter what warm, fuzzy memories we have of Splash Mountain, no matter how much Disney tried to round the edges of the overt racism, the reality is, it’s based on such a stupendously racist and white supremacist storyline that Disney refuses to air Song of the South and so boy howdy was it beyond time for it to go. Now, Disney has announced that they will be replacing Disneyland’s Splash Mountain with a Princess and the Frog themed attraction, which picks up after the end of the movie and weaves a new story (akin to the Frozen ride reskin of Maelstrom at EPCOT, versus the movie recap experience of Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure ). First, it was the rework of the Redhead in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. ![]() With all Keeper account types except for the free one, a users’ passwords and other data can sync seamlessly between all of their different devices. The Keeper Desktop App is also available for download on Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems and gives users secure access to their personal, private vault. The app is available for download on mobile devices and tablets through the Microsoft Store, Apple App Store, and Google Play. The browser extension, also known as KeeperFill, fills a users’ login information (and other personal information such as credit card numbers) into websites automatically so that a user doesn’t have to remember passwords or even type them in. Keeper is compatible with all of the most popular browser extensions, mobile devices, and operating systems. Additionally, LastPass also allows users to opt into two-factor authentication for added security when logging into their most important accounts or using a new device. These keys locally encrypt and decrypt all of a user’s data so that only the user, and never LastPass, may access it. To log in to LastPass, a user must enter their email address and master password, and then secure encryption keys are created on the user’s device. Like Keeper, LastPass also uses 256-bit encryption and never knows or has access to a user’s master password. Users can only retrieve their master password through two-factor authentication (using something they know and something they have, such as a mobile device) or a personal security question. Keeper users access their vaults and stored passwords through their unique master password, which only they know. The Keeper vault uses a multi-key system to encrypt each password with a strong, randomly generated 256-bit key, which is protected by two additional layers of encrypted keys. Keeper uses a zero-knowledge system that, by encrypting and decrypting information on users’ devices, means the company never has access to or knowledge of users’ passwords.
